Dog Friendly Beach :: Bay County, Florida

On October 11, 2007, the Panama City Beach City Council voted to establish a dog-friendly beach for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. Bay Families with Dogs assisted the city by donating a pet waste station for the beach as well as paying for the servicing of the station.

The area is on city property to the west of the Dan Russell Pier, at the southern base of the new Pier Park shopping center. This exciting addition to the area will mean that a pet-friendly corridor now exists from the beach up through Aaron Bessant Park at Pier Park, and across to Frank Brown Park and Gayle's Trails.

We would like to thank the city for providing these pet-friendly amenities that will improve the desirability of the area for visitors and residents alike.

Bay Families with Dogs held a beach cleanup on Saturday, April 12 at Panama City's new pet-friendly beach. “Spring is here, and our members wanted to show our appreciation to the Panama City Beach City Council members that in October 2007 created a small place on our miles of beaches that we can enjoy with our dogs,” said Stephanie Somerset, Executive Director of Bay Families with Dogs. “Our members want to give back to the community and the environment as an expression of thanks,” she said. The dog friendly beach has rules, of course, that must be followed if we are to retain this wonderful access. They include staying within the dog beach boundary, ALWAYS picking up after your dog, and using a leash. Click here to download the Council Resolution, map of the area, and the entire list of rules.

You can also download a PDF of Bay Families with Dogs' Mainland Dog Beach Brochure, with a location map of the beach and a list of the dog beach rules that you can carry with you!

Our pet-friendly beach has been favorably featured on News 13 WMBB's Problem Solver Report with Jerry Brown! View Video and Transcript.

TESTIMONIALS
to the Dog-Friendly Beach

We checked out the beach tonight. Found one couple from TX who specifically changed their vacation from Destin to Panama City Beach because of the dog beach.
Now to the clean-up - NO dog issues, but we did pick up 2 hot dogs (thanks to Emma's nose), a beer bottle, Starbucks cup cover, bottle caps, and other human trash.

Hello! Just a short note letting you know that I went over to the beach and it looked good to me. While I was there, I picked up some trash..... otherwise it looked great! - Veronica 10/07

I'm here on a Saturday and there are several people with dogs. Everyone is having a blast, and except for a little human trash, there is no waste on the ground. - David 10/07

We had a wonderful time on a Friday evening after work. The sunset was gorgeous. My dog got some great exercise and as a result, so did I. Met some people from out of town who were ecstatic to find that Panama City had a pet-friendly beach. Everyone was behaving and the beach was very clean. - Cat 10/07

I visited the dog beach today for the first time, and it was great. A couple of other dogs around, coming and going. Area was clean, waste bags were available. Our dogs not a water lover, but he enjoyed the change of scenery and fresh air. I'm sure will visit it again with the weather so great. - Joyce 11/13

We went out to the dog beach Sunday evening about 4:30. There were about 10 dogs with their humans enjoying the beach. Just a few pieces of garbage to pick up - no "dog messes"! There was even a couple there who had just moved here from England. They were so happy to hear about the Dog Beach. My dog loved the time on the beach! - Julie 11/07

We are owners of beachfront property in Panama City Beach. The property has been in my family for over 35 years, and I remember when dogs could run on the beach unimpeded. I am so happy someone is working to increase dog access to the beach. I think not having dog-friendly beaches actually hurts the tourism industry in Bay County.
When we travel, we always look for dog-friendly areas, whether it be the beaches of North Carolina or Florida. And, I am sure the South Walton County beach areas garner much more tourism because of their pet-friendly status.

I’m so excited to read about the new dog friendly beach! That is great, and I look forward to visiting your area from Tennessee, just for that reason. -Rebecca 03/08
